The Lions have done well to score on the stroke of half time. That will give them some confidence in the second half. They need to reduce their mistakes and take their own opportunities.
If they do not they cannot expect to secure a victory here. The Lions win another penalty after the Hurricanes collapse the maul. The Lions win a penalty as the Hurricanes infringe in the scrum. Jantjies finds touch inside the Hurricanes The Lions have not arrived here as yet. They run the risk of being blown away in the first 40 minutes.
It has been all Hurricanes and helped on by silly Lions mistakes. TJ Perenara applies pressure on Cronje at the scrum and Cronje loses it forward. Ardie Savea does well to collect it and surge through a gap to score a long range try!
Yet another Lions mistake and it started with that quick tap. Toomaga-Allen is penalised for a scrum infringement inside the Lions half. They take a quick tap and progress into the Hurricanes half. The Lions decide to run the ball from inside their own They get away with it after the ball is turned over, but a Hurricanes pass unfortunately goes into touch. They win the line-out but eventually their move comes to an end, as Jordie Barrett is shoved into touch on the Lions goal line.
Milner-Skudder launches a counter attack after a kick through from Cronje. Vorster is then penalised for a deliberate knock-down in a kickable position, but they opt for a line-out ten meters out. Lionel Mapoe is caught offside and Jordie Barrett makes no mistake with the kick. They now have a 12 point lead. Goosen breaks the line and the Lions do well to catch up with him. That could have been dangerous. It started with a Hurricanes penalty in their own half. Beauden Barrett breaks through the line and offloads brilliantly to Goosen, who makes no mistake.
Where was the defence? The pass from Jantjies after a scrum lands up in no mans land and TJ Perenara pounces on the ball and kicks it through. The bounce favours him and the rest is history. The Crusaders beat the Chiefs in the first semi-final earlier. If the Lions win then they will host the Crusaders in the final next week, however if they fail to come away with a win, then the Hurricanes will have to travel to Christchurch. The Hurricanes have beaten the Lions in their last eight meetings and have won four of their last five games in South Africa. Jantjies can relieve the pressure again.
Rush Defence are killing the Liins space,coulda been different if the ref handled it better initially,but take nothing away from Canes! Strength of character has defined the Lions this season. Time for one final showing Wind always deemed an advantage, but often it forces the other side to hold onto the ball more, sometimes leading to better rugby.
This Hurricanes defense is an incredible thing. Difficult to see how the Lions are going to ever get ahead in this match. Beauden Barrett scores an important try for the Hurricanes and they push the lead even further. This is his 9th try of this season. Warren Whiteley concedes a penalty for tackling the player in the air and it is a penalty for the Hurricanes. Elton Jantjies misses the penalty goal as he drives the kick wide from right in front of the uprights and the Lions fail to score. A couple of penalties conceded by the Hurricanes, first by Jason Woodward for not releasing the ball and then by Brad Shields for the same reason.
Final 20 minutes remaining in this game and the Hurricanes have held the lead throughout this game and the Lions have not scored in the second half.
The Lions are controlling the possession again and they are looking to attack. Hurricanes have done well to take the momentum of the first half into the second. Beauden Barrett kicks the penalty goal in and increases the lead back to 10 points. Good kick from 40 metres out, Lions have not looked like scoring in the second half so far. A couple of penalties conceded by the Lions and that will slow the game down and help the Hurricanes.
Andries Ferreira concedes the first for not releasing the ball and Franco Mostert concedes the next for being caught offside.
Ruan Combrinck with the linebreak for the Lions and they are putting some pressure on the Hurricanes. It has been a tense game and a low-scoring one. Just one try in the game so far, Hurricanes lead by 7 points. Hurricanes hold a 7 point lead after a tense first half. The Lions enjoyed a lot of possession but they were not able to convert that into tries or points. The Lions are dominating the possession again but they have not been able to convert possession into points.
Lionel Mapoe concedes a penalty for being offside of the ruck. Lions concede another penalty, Julian Redelinghuys for boring in at the scrum. Elton Jantjies will need to be a lot better than he was last week against the Sharks where he had a shocker and was substituted. The breakdown will need to better for the JHB men after last week. The Canes flood the first ruck but the home team get a second scrum.
Their set piece looks in good shape, just from those two scrums. Vaea Fifita is penalised for entering the ruck from the side. Normally, the Lions kick to the corner, but this time Jantjies will take a shot at goal. Jantjies gets his team on the board, more importantly, the Springbok starts well; he left 10 points on the field last week, which almost cost his team: From the centerfield scrum, the Lions lose possession after another Jantjies stray pass to Ross Cronje.
The ball is hacked forward and Perenara chases and wins the race to the ball, flopping on it over the try-line: Beauden Barrett ghosts through a big gap in the Lions midfield after a good lineout and wraparound move with Ngani Laumape. The lock just stole two successive lineouts, relieving the pressure on his side. The Lions are under some intense pressure, most of their own doing.
Like last week versus the Sharks, they have started very poorly. They must cut out the silly errors. Kwagga Smith is the next Lion to lose the ball forward. Quick water break after an injury assessment. Ross Cronje breaks from the scrum, races down the field and offloads to Jantjies.
Eventually, the Lions are penalised at the ruck and Beauden Barrett kicks to the corner. The Lions turn the ball over again and the Canes go wide, but the ball goes out after a stray pass. A scuffle breaks out after the Lions are awarded a penalty; they tap and go quickly rather than kick to touch.
It proves costly because Cronje has the ball knocked out of his hands by Sam Lousi. Savea picks up and races clear from the halfway line to score under the posts: It is way too easy for the Canes. He really should have scored there, but they do go back for another penalty.
They go to their lineout again. Lionel Mapoe joins the set piece. The Lions have a mountain to climb if they are to win this match; they are making too many silly mistakes and their midfield defence has been poor.
